My wife setup family sharing to manage our kids various device accounts but we have now grown to the point where I want to join the family sharing group as a co-owner. I have worked through the process of her inviting me to join but it keeps coming up with “group has other members” and won’t let me join. How do I fix this?

You need to disband your own Family Group before you can join a different one.
You cannot be part of 2 Family Groups at the same time.

I am the sole member of a family group because we had briefly started a new account for our youngest before deleting the account and creating a new one under my wife’s group.
The family doesn’t even show up anymore under setting however when I follow the link to join my wife’s family it says I am the sole member of a group and asks if I am sure I want to move. After I say yes it comes up with an error.
This might help for clarification:
Exactly how many people are in this group already? Family Sharing has a maximum of 6 users including the Family Organizer.
If there's already 6 Apple IDs joined, you won't be able to join.
Thanks for the response. She currently has 4 (counting her) in her group.
Then you should be able to join.
Are you sure its referring to the group you are trying to join?
Are you currently part of another Family Group you may be the organizer of?
Ok, I did that but even after selecting disband my family group hasn’t deleted. It’s been several hours, how long should it take?
I’ve tried disbanding my previous family group several times but it’s still there. Any other ideas?
