Command F does not bring up the search box on Mac Safari

I would like to open the find box on safari by holding command and F, but whenever I do, it opens the Finder on Mac. Any suggestions?

Hi jaber.gharib,

Thanks for keeping us updated! In that case, let's start your Mac in safe mode to test if the issue continues to occur. Since this is unexpected behavior, safe mode is a great way to isolate the issue to some installed app, as it prevents login items from loading automatically when your computer starts up.

The following guide explains how to start up in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

If the issue is no longer occurring while in safe mode, you'll want to complete these steps to test your login items:

If your Mac has a blue screen or other startup problems

This process will help identify if there is some installed application that is contributing to the issue.

If the issue continues to occur in safe mode, let us know the version of macOS installed. This can be found under Apple menu () > About this Mac. If an update is available, we can recommend updating using these steps:

Let us know how it goes, or if you have questions.

Take care!

Hi jaber.gharib,

We appreciate you visiting Apple Support Communities for help with this behavior when pressing Command + F in Safari. We're glad to look into it with you and help!

Since Command + F should open the search function in Safari by default, let's restart your Mac once before testing again.

If the issue continues to occur, it sounds like a keyboard shortcut may be configured to open a Finder window when you press this key combination. To customize keyboard shortcuts, head into System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts, and select "Spotlight" from the list of options on the left. Do you see Command + F selected as a shortcut for any option listed here?

If not, click on "App Shortcuts," and let us know if you see any shortcuts configured there to use Command + F.

If you're still not seeing this combination configured, click on the "Plus" symbol to add a new app shortcut, choose Safari as the application, and then type in the following text exactly as shown in "Menu Title" to configure Command + F to find in Safari:

Find...

Click "Keyboard Shortcut" then press Command + F and click "Add." Test in Safari to see if the behavior is set up properly.

Here's a great resource with more information about keyboard shortcuts in macOS:

We're here for you if you've got any questions!

Have a great day.
