Why are messages deleted from my iPhone still on my Apple Watch?

Why are messages deleted from my iPhone still showing up on my Apple Watch? Even when deleted, strings of same texts show as unread return from people even when it had been deleted (trash). Aggravating.

When I delete a message on the phone, it does not delete it from the watch, the same happens when I delete it from the watch, then the message is not deleted from the phone. The phone and the watch have the latest software. There is no problem with adding / deleting contacts to the phone book and deleting recent calls.

Youi have to delete them off the watch as well as off the phone.
