Prepare my internal HDD MAC OS Disk externally

I think I can. BUT .

I want to remove the internal HD from my Mac Book Pro .

Place in a chassis.

Then prepare it. Meaning I want to set it up with Mountain X Pro as a bootable drive.

When that is al working I then want to install that HD back into my MAC and boot up from it.

No external drives

Is this OK to do this ?

I am doing this as I just do not seem to be able to get the erase internal disk not greyed out so I can go through the reinstall of MAC OS. So I thought I would do it all externally by connecting it to USB port. The MAC can find my USB devices.

While booted to the macOS installer you need to use Disk Utility to properly erase the drive. Here is an Apple article with instructions on how to properly erase the boot drive if you are using macOS 10.13+ (maybe even 10.12):

If you are installing macOS 10.11 or earlier (perhaps even macOS 10.12), then you may need to follow these instructions to properly partition and format the boot drive:
