Dropbox on iPad and Mac...is this possible or do I need to change to iCloud

The serve rather different purposes. iCloud is for back ups and syncing. You can't use it to offload files. Sharing files is not quite as easy as with DropBox. I'd review the features of both and decide if you want one or the other or both.
