My iphone keeps spinning in the upper left corner as if it

Is there some trick or bug fix that I need to do to keep this from occurring all the time?

Hi rswc90,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We understand you’re having trouble with a spinning icon in your status bar. We’re happy to help.

We suggest restarting your iPhone and then making sure you’re running the latest software version:

Restart your iPhone

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If that doesn’t help, try resetting your network settings. This will remove any saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN/APN settings, so you’ll want to have those handy (if applicable). To reset network settings, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Whatever you may call it, I know no way to stop it. I tried deleting specific apps because people wrote what you said, that (Facebook, PayPal, Words with friends, ebay...) was the problem. The problem still persisted.

Is there a way to see which app is doing this? None of my apps are left open.

When I look at battery usage by app, it shows a different app each time that is using most of the juice.

Also, although “apps background refresh” is turned on, NONE of the apps are allowed to refresh.

Thanks 🙏

I appreciate the reply. This spinning does not only happen on Wi-Fi. This happens when I’m not connected to Wi-Fi, if I have turned WiFi off, and when I’m not using a VPN.

At this point, the only way to stop it is by holding Siri down and then saying something to it, anything, and clicking on it several times again. Eventually the spinning will stop if I do this repeatedly.

This was happening also with my iPhone 7. When I upgraded to the SE 2020, I was assured by Apple that it was a bug in the iPhone 7! I always have the latest non-beta iOS installed so I know I’m up-to-date on that. Also, I have done soft restarts and hard restarts. I have reset the network settings on my phone as well.

I see online that I am not the only one that is having this difficulty. My concern is that it runs the battery down very quickly and it’s a pain in the butt unless I catch it. I should not have to catch it to be able to use my phone the way it was intended. I am unsure how to get Apple to take this bug seriously 😳

Facebook is the most likely offender, followed by Safari if you don’t close pages. What you can do is turn off Wi-Fi in Settings/Wi-Fi (NOT the Control Center), go to Settings/Cellular and either reset statistics if you don’t use them, or take a screen shot if you do. Then let the phone sit for a while (several hours, at least, a day is better), then go to Settings/Cellular and see which apps have accumulated usage.
