Unable to open Garageband 6.0.5 in 10.12.6 Sierra

I last used Garageband (6.0.5) in 2019, running Sierra on my MacBook Pro (early 2011). No problems at that time. I haven't upgraded my OS in the interim, but all attempts to open the app today result in getting a dialog box stating that GarageBand can't be opened, and that I should check with the developer to make sure the app and my current OS are compatible. Doesn't make a lot of sense; 6.0.5 is the appropriate version for Sierra according to all info I can access, and the two played nicely together the last time I tried. Tried a restart without any success. Suggestions? I have seen reinstalling 6.0.5 as one possibility, but haven't been able to figure out how to do that as it no longer seems to be available. I can upgrade to High Sierra and then download GarageBand 10.3, but then I will have to upgrade some of my non-Apple software, which will cost some money. Scratching my head on this one.

GarageBand '11, version 6.0.5 is still running for me on macOS 10.14.6 Mojave. It has only been rendered incompatible by the macOS 10.15 Catalina upgrade.

Is there a crash log? If yes, you may want to post the first 50 lines.

The most common reasons for GarageBand crashing are:

  • incompatible add-ons; if you have audio units installed or VST plug-ins, old drivers for an audio interface, they can make GarageBand crash. You may want to check the folder /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/ for older plug-ins that might be causing trouble.
  • Even, if you installed some other older program, that is not related to GarageBand at all, it might have installed older, incompatible system extensions, that are making GarageBand crash. Did you perhaps instal an old version of Final Cut or similar? Does GarageBand launch correctly, when you restart the Mac in Safe Mode? How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
  • Or, GarageBand may be trying to open an older project, when it is launching. And the project might have become corrupted. Try to lunch GarageBand by double-clicking a different project to launch GarageBand.

Hello. I am a current user of GarageBand 6.0.5 on Mojave, 10.14.6.

I keep its installer (iLife) disc to defend the music environment, but it does not seem to work any more. I just simply copy the application from my backup HDD, after deleting the newer version of pre-installed GarageBand. Additional instruments should be downloaded via MainStage3, or manually copied from your backup. There seem to be two locations for them, that is, “/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument”, and “/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/“. Download seems to be easier at first sight, but it often ends up with imperfection. You will notice the trouble when launching the GarageBand because it says some instrument files are missing or so. Once you get the perfect sound set, you should backup them. Loops are installed in “/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/”, whose download may also be easily imperfect. When I met an index error, I dragged folders of “/Library/Audio” and “/Library/Application Support/Garageband/” onto loops for re-indexing (I’m not confident about it now).

Recently I had trouble in starting GarageBand. Reading the error message, I rewrite the “MobileDevice.framework” with older one from other Mac. Below is what I did to write it over:

  1. Restart Mac with recovery mode (restart while pressing down ⌘ + r)
  2. Open Terminal and enter “csrutil disable”.
  3. Restart Mac.
  4. Rewrite the new “MobileDevice.framework” with the older “MobileDevice.framework”.
  5. Restart Mac with recovery mode and open Terminal to enter “csrutil enable”.
  6. Restart Mac.

Now GarageBand 6.0.5 is back to me again.

Hopefully there may be something helpful for you.

Thank you for reading my poor Japanese English.

I keep its installer (iLife) disc to defend the music environment, but it does not seem to work any more.

The problem with the old iLife installer is, that it will install a very old version, that is not compatible with the newer system versions. And Apple has removed the GarageBand updaters from the support page, after the developer certificate of the 6.0.5 updater has expired. Even if you could run the old iLife installer, you would be stuck with an older version, that can no linger run on any version past Mt. Lion. So keeping backup copies of the GarageBand 6.0.5 application and the /Library/Application Support/Garageband/ folder and /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/ is essential to be able to reinstall GarageBand 6.0.5 .

My GarageBand GarageBand 6.0.5 (428.5) does not open anymore on Mojave. This is unexpected, I was still using it last week without any problems. I haven't done any software updates or anything, something has just happened. I ran the antivirus scan on computer but nothing. I'm baffled and mortified :(

Thanks for the reply, and possible solutions. I tried this morning to open the different GarageBand projects I have individually; same result with all of them, so it appears it isn't a corrupted file on one song. You asked about the crash log, so I have copied it here. I did send it to Apple as well.

I will check for plug-ins as suggested (just have to find that library). I would be surprised if that was the issue, though, as I don't recall downloading any plugins at all.

I need to try opening in safe mode as well.

In the meantime, have fun with the crash log; not something I know how to interpret myself! Thanks again.

Checked the Library/Audio/Plugins, and there are only 2 in there, both Audacity plugins from 2013. Audacity opens fine. I just use Audacity for digitizing LP's. Haven't used it for a little while, but it functioned fine last time. Of course, GarageBand functioned fine the last time I tried it, too.

Tried opening in Safe Mode, but my computer won't open in that mode. Remembered I now have a firmware lock which was put in place when my Mac's video was repaired by disabling one of the two graphics chips. I tried booting in Recovery Mode so I could disable the firmware password temporarily, but the startup seemed to hang up, so I eventually gave up. I will try it again later.

There seems to be a problem with one of the system additions.

The crash log is showing, that GarageBand is launching the framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Frameworks

And this framework is looking for /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/MobileDevice

It is installed, but "wrong architecture" and cannot be loaded. One of the frameworks is incompatible. And this is typically caused by installing some application, that modifies the system by adding older, incompatible frameworks, and other, innocent apps get trapped into calling outdated software.

The easiest fix is usually to install the system by booting into the Recovery partition. This will replace the older, incompatible extensions with the correct ones.

This is described here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery – Apple Support

make a current backup of your Mac, then boot into the recovery portion by restarting the Mac while holding down the key combination Command (⌘)-R.

Then you can reinstall the current system on top of your current system. Your user data and your installed applications should remain unchanged.
