I cannot deregister an old telephone number from iMessage. What else can I do?

I have recently got a new SIM and had to transfer my mobile number over (took a few days). Since then my iPhone only recognises the wrong (temporary) telephone number and I cannot register it.

Can anyone help? Following Apple guidelines does not work!

Remove your phone number

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Select your Apple ID and tap Sign Out. ...
If the phone number that you want to remove belongs to an iPhone that you can't access, change your Apple ID password. This removes all phone numbersfrom your iPad, iPod touch, and Mac.
