FaceTime not working Gen 1 iPad mini iOS 9.3.5

Hi...during lockdown we have been using FaceTime to talk to an elderly grandparent. We have recommissioned an old Gen 1 iPad Mini with no problems thus far. She has dementia so it has been stripped down with only FaceTime operating to keep it simple . It has now stopped connecting and won’t send or receive any video to any other device, though it goes through the motions of appearing to ring out.

Have reset all settings, done all the usual force quits and restarts. Re-signed into iCloud etc. But still nothing.

iOS is 9.3.5, up to date and wont upgrade any further. A quick trawl of the net shows it seems to have been a problem since April. Is there a workaround or are we forced to buy new hardware?

Same issue here with a first ten iPad mini cellular running iOS 9.3.6. Apple needs to look at this. There were issues with FaceTime on iOS 9 devices earlier this year that had been resolved but they seem to have recurred since the release of iOS 14. Presumably some problem on the server end with Apple that is affecting these older devices.
