Message to Update Apple ID

Everytime I use my iPhone or iPad, I get the message to update my apple id. I have tried all of the suggestions available, but nothing has helped. It is so annoying!

It was the passcode! I didn’t have a passcode set on either one of my devices. Thanks Tammy for that bit of info that none of the other support threads I found related to this issue mentioned. Most of them were from 2018 so perhaps it’s just the same symptoms from a different issue. But in any case, if anyone else is having this issue and you do not use/want a passcode, here is what I did to make the message go away:

1- set up a passcode on device 1. I chose the simple 4digit passcode so it’s easy to remember through this process as you will have to use it several times.

2- if you are also setting your iCloud Keychain security code when you update the Apple ID password, then also turn on the Keychain in settings>iCloud>Keychain.

3- update the Apple ID password like you’ve done a million times now. It will now ask you to enter your passcode instead of your Apple ID password and possibly your iCloud Keychain security code too.

4- on second device, the update Apple ID message will appear (as usual for me). Do steps 1, 2, and 3 on second device.

5- check that both devices no longer have the update Apple ID message in setting. If that worked you are done!

if you do not want to have a passcode and/or use keychain on both/either device then now you should be able to turn off Keychain and/or passcode on either device in any order and the message shouldn’t come back. Probably until the next iOS update.

good luck!

Hey patfrombeaufort,

We understand that you're seeing an alert on both your iPhone and iPad to update your Apple ID, but the alert continues even though you're following the prompts. We want to help with this! To start, be sure both your iPad and iPhone are fully updated. The current software version for both is 14.0.1. To see what you have installed, tap Settings > General > About. If updates are needed, be sure to back up first:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Update apps or use automatic downloads

After updating, you will want to check every device you have for any approval notifications. If you come across any you will want to complete them.

You'll also want to be sure that you have a passcode set for both devices: Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and then try again.

Make sure that you are signed into iCloud on each device you own.

After these steps, go through the prompts on each device once more to see if they clear now. You may also want to be sure to connect to a known, trusted Wi-Fi network when updating the settings.

If the issue continues, we recommend reaching out to Apple Support directly. They can be reached here: Get Support

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities!

Have a great day!

patfrombeaufort,

You're very welcome, and apologies for the confusion! For approval notifications, we're talking about the alert to update your Apple ID in the Settings app. After following the steps, check to see if you still see the notification, and if so, go through the prompts to see if it's accepted.

If the issue does continue after those steps, you'll definitely want to reach out to Apple Support to look into it further. Here's the link to reach them again, just in case: Get Support

Cheers!

I have this same issue, and I also noticed when I update the password on one device and the message to update goes away, the message to update appears on the other device. Repeat the update process on the second device and the message reappears on the first device. I am also having to provide my iCloud Keychain passcode whenever I update the Apple ID password. And I do not have keychain turned on to use on either device! Both devices are on my same Apple ID account, both are on iOS 14.0. iPhone 8 and iPad Air 2. I also have my windows computer on my account that I use to backup my devices, if that makes any difference.

I can’t seem to make the update message go away either!
