If the serial number is not listed in "About This Mac", it is on the bottom of your MacBook Air.

If you have signed into any of the iCloud services with it, the serial number should be on appleID.apple.com.
Of course you can report it to your local police. Whether they can recover it or require some other proof is something they would tell you.
