Running OS Catalina on Macbook Pro Mid 2012

Hi everyone, I am a photographer and at the moment I am running os Sierra. Not sure if it is alright to run Catalina smoothly in my machine. I have found from my research that overall performance becomes slower after installing Catalina in some machines released on mid 2012. Though mac support says that 'Macbook Pro mid 2012' is compatible but still I am confused. Because, compatibility doesn't always mean that it will run smoothly in compare to new released machines due to backdated hardwares. Thanks.

The unit may be better suited for upgrade to High Sierra 10.13.6; given 'rotational' storage HDD

the system may choose/try to install an APFS format in there; or better, Mojave 10.14.6 on SSD.

My Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch (non-Retina) has recent RAM upgrade to 16GB, & yet

only 240GB 'blade' SSD and no space for conventional shaped drive. Harder to upgrade.

This appears to have been a 'built-to-order' model. Does nicely with Mojave 10.14.6 as it is; yet

wonder about this odd configuration, and no clear replacement path for blade SSD upgrade.

{..Nearest blade/upgrade (not exact match) appears for 2013 MacBook Pro, & Retina display..}

Just an observation; Mojave is adequate and best if running older 32-bit apps, for certain tasks.

Good luck & happy computing!🐌|🐢

Same experience as kaz-k. Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13" (non-Retina) and Catalina runs smoothly and well as did all the other prior OS upgrades (Sierra, High Sierra etc). I upgraded the hardware myself to 16GB RAM and 500GB SSD 4-5 years ago as I was planning for the future and because IDE drives are slow. I regularly use Adobe CC and other programs with fairly high graphics and computational demands with little or no problems. Works well for my needs.

If you've still the original hard drive installed you would see an immediate and impressive improvement in overall performance and capabilities if you replaced it with an equivalent or larger SSD. Upgrading the RAM to the maximum your laptop supports will enhance it further.

Good luck.
