Allowing my son to download Instagram

I’m trying to allow my son to have Instagram on his phone that I have linked to mine for family share limitations with screen time and such. But the request is not coming to my phone?

hes 12 and doesn’t have any social media apps. Just trying to figure out what I can do to allow him to have this one to communicate with his cousins.

While you may need to contact Instagram support, we'd like to help answer your question as best we can:

You mentioned your son is 12, but the age limit for Instagram is 13(higher in some regions). We found an Instagram website that has more details about this: How do I report a child under the age of 13 on Instagram?
Is your son not able to use another app, like Messages as one example?
Are both your and his iPhones up to date? Just in case, here are the steps: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
