Connecting iMac to New MacBook

I am trying to connect my MacBook to my iMac using a USB type C to HDMI Adapter that connects to a Mini Display Port to HDMI Cable. I hit the Command and F2 button and nothing. Am I using the wrong cables? Cause this should work.

iMac 27″, macOS 10.12
