Hello zoomerpc,

It sounds like when you try to power off your iPhone XS, it goes into Emergency SOS. Here are some resources that can help:

When you "Press and hold the side button and one of the Volume buttons" both the Emergency SOS and Slide to Power Off sliders should appear.

You can also shut down your iPhone in Settings > General > Shut Down.

Hope this information helps.

Have a good day.

i agree with ryan here, but also i want to mention that if you want to force reboot your phone without having to use the screen you can click and release the volume up button, click and release volume down button, and then hold the power button till the apple logo appears, its worth noting atleast 2 things, one, be sure to click the volume buttons in quick succession, so don't pause or else it wont register, also, while holding the power button, if it feels like it's taking forever its not just you, it could take anywhere from 10 seconds, all the way to 20 to 25, it seems to be different for everybody for some reason, if you want to read the official apple support article its this, https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/force-restart-iphone-iph8903c3ee6/ios (honestly i already described in detail the steps but idk, you can look at it if you'd like), i hope what i and ryan said helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask and i or someone else would love to help more (also just for clarification, what i have described here is JUST for force rebooting your phone, just in case if you cant use the screen or something, and what ryan said is the more formal, correct way to reboot your phone, you should follow his steps in normal circumstances, i'm mostly just putting this just in case if its needed, and also one last note is that force rebooting with these steps and rebooting with the steps ryan gave do the same thing, just different methods for different reasons/circumstances)
