I disabled my iCloud photos on my iPhone and to my surprise found that it deleted all the photos taken from iPhone. Why is that ? I don't want to delete photos taken from the camera roll, just the ones on iCloud.

When you turned off iCloud Photo Library did you select the option to download and keep them on iPhone? If not, turn iCloud back on and let all pictures sync and show again. Then turn it back off and select this option.

This is what happens when you disable iCloud Photos, i.e. it deletes your photos because you're telling the system you don't wish to use iCloud Photos any longer to store your photos.
Disabling iCloud on iPhone deleted photos taken from that device too
