News App not working well on iPhone

Over the past few months, and especially since installing iOS 14, my Apple News app is terrible. I pay a monthly fee but it is unusable, with occasional moments where it works. Right now, 4:30 p.m., for example, when I open it, there is nothing new since noon. But that isn't even the real problem. The major problem is that none of the articles are available. I tap on anything and I get a screen that says "loading," ending up with "Story Unavailable. There may be a problem with the server or network. Please try again later." Note that nothing else has this problem; there is not an internal problem (even though I tried other networks and reboots for debugging).

The problem depends slightly on the news source. Vanity Fair is usually OK except that the pictures don't load. But CNN, NBC, NPR, Huffpost, Buzzfeed, Politico, Slate, Washington Post, and the links to News+ articles just won't load.

It seems to work better on my computer, but News on the Mac doesn't give me the same set of sources as it does on my iPhone. I tried rebooting the iPhone, switching wifi networks, turning off wifi and using LTE, rebooting the AirPort, etc. None of that has helped at all. My internet connection shows that I get 26 Mbps download and 28 Mbps upload. My iPhone XS Max is running iOS 14.0.1 and there is 115 GB free space. I'm about ready to drop my subscription and try to get Yahoo News or Google News to do a better job aggregating; six months ago, Apple News was my main source of news and I bragged about it to everyone. Is there a way I can make it work again?

Hello Russell Kurtz.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand that the Apple News app is having trouble with loading news stories. We will be glad to assist. You have performed some great steps to trouble shoot this. Let's also delete and reinstall the Apple News app to see if that helps:

Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 12, iOS 13, or iPadOS device or Apple Watch

Cheers.

The main problem appears to have been at the News server. It worked reasonably well for a week, now it slow. Checking with down detector.com, Apple's News server has been spotty. These days, even when I have a good wifi connection on my phone (50 Mbps download, 30 Mbps upload, for example), News stories are often slow to load (for example, 25 seconds to load a BuzzFeed article that I can load direct from buzzfeed.com in about one second). It's frustrating but apparently it isn't on the phone; when I eliminated the News app, then reinstalled it, there were some inconveniences in the Notifications but otherwise it just went back to normal and is still marginally useful.

It turns out that the Apple News servers were so overloaded that that could not keep up. Now that the election is over, News is much more reliable. Still, I didn't seem to have the problem with News on the Mac, just on the iPhone, and the competitive new aggregators (Google, Yahoo) had sufficient overhead to handle the high volume. Slightly disappointed in Apple but still using the app and the problem is basically solved.
