How do I change eye color using shape and color masks and have the change come in gradually?

I am using a color mask and a shape mask to change the color of an eye (it's in profile). I want to have the color change gradually and fade out gradually. I assume I have to do something like have the opacity of the new color fade out and then in again using key frames. But how do I use key frames with a mask?

Hi fox_m. Still have a question. I have done the color board with a color mask and a shape mask. That only took a couple of hours to put in all the keyframes. So now I want to fade in the color change, so it changes from brown (in original) to blue (in color mask). I know how to add the keyframes to the color board, thanks to you, but how do I actually use them to fade the color correction in? I know how to add a key frame with a color correction not turned on and then add a keyframe somewhere down the timeline with the color correction turned on (which fades it in), but I don't know how to fade it in when I already have the color correction applying to the entire clip.
