Can I create a new Apple ID and not lose my messages, contacts, etc.?

Years ago my husband and I shared an Apple ID. Recently, with the use of iCloud it has combined our images, contacts, and text messages together. It's time to split (the account, that is). My husband will create a new Apple ID but we want to make sure he still keeps his own texts, images, and contacts when we are done. Is this possible, and if so, how? Thanks in advance.
