Ipad Air battery life

We got this IPad, model A1474, I think an Air WIFI, in a tradein in lieu of paying $99.00 for a battery replacement.

This was 2.5 years ago and lo, the battery on this one is dead.

So, is that the expected life span of the LION battery, 2.5 years ?

What later model has a better battery life span cause I am getting a bit tired of this.
