Battery lifespan left on 5s ?
is there a way to tell how much ‘life’ I have on my 5s battery ? Is there an alert that it needs to be replaced ? And does it have to be taken to an Apple store to have this done ?

In an old device like that you don’t need any number readout. Is it lasting long enough to get you through the day? Are you getting frustrated at how often it needs charging? Does it discharge very rapidly from a full charge? If yes to any of those, you need a new battery. And yes, you must take it or send it to Apple to get the battery replaced.
Be sure to back it up before you take it in for service too.
