Black boxes appear in images in Photos

Small black boxes are appearing in images after they are uploaded into Photos.

The boxes appear randomly and not in every image. They disappear if I open the image to edit it within the Photos program - so it seems like it is gone, however the boxes will then reappear when I export the image out of Photos, and can be seen both when the image is a thumbnail or when expanded.

I'm using V 3 of photos on a MacOS High Sierra v 10.13.6

As a side note that may or may not be relevent - my Photos program (along with several other of the Mac built in programs like ITunes) is very slow in opening on my computer and sometimes doesn't open at all, and once open is prone to crashing.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Have you tried to revert the images with the black blocks to the original version, when the photo is open in Edit mode? Sometimes the previous adjustments applied with iPhoto or Aperture are causing such a blocky experience. I have seen quite a few of such black blocks after migrating my Aperture libraries to photos.

But do check the drive first as Tony recommended. That can never hurt. And making a separate backup of the original image files is always important to protect your library from JPEG corruption caused by a failing drive.
