Did Apple Brick "Text Message Forwarding" And "Calls on Other Devices" on devices running software older then iOS 12?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on an issue I am having, I have an iPad running iPadOS 12 and an iPad running iOS 10 both have the functionality for "Text Message Forwarding" and "Calls on Other Devices". However, the iPad running on iOS 10 seems to be bricked. The toggle for "Calls On Other Devices" on my iPhone(running iOS 13) is toggled on but no calls go through. Text Message is toggled off and can not be toggled on - it asks me to enter a code that's 'supposed' to show on the iPad but the code never appears.

Does anyone know if Apple had done this intentionally? I really don't see why they would but it's the only explanation I can think of it for it to be disabled.

Hi windows tv,

We understand you're not able to properly forward messages from your iPhone to your two other iPad devices. This is a crucial feature we use all the time to have easy access to our messages across out devices and we want to help get it working for you.

For this scenario, we first recommend making sure all three of your devices are fully updated. To see full instructions on backing up and updating your devices, please visit: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Next, if you haven't already, we highly recommend making sure you've followed all of the steps shown here: How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac

Last but not least, make sure that you're connected to the internet on those devices as a stable connection will be required for this feature to work properly.

If you're still experiencing the same behavior after all of the steps above, please reach out to us via: Contact Apple Support

We hope that helps.

Take care.

Hi, karina184,

I want to note down some things, when I first enabled these features my iPhone was on iOS 9 and my iPads were on iOS 10. Right around the release of iOS 12 is when I noticed issues. I had to reset my network connection on my phone and after doing so the previous iOS 10 devices no longer were able to use the features I've asked about.

Regarding updating: no. I hate iPadOS and it's annoying gestures. I've reached out to the Apple Community to see if anyone had knowledge on if Apple purposely or accidentally broke the feature on older iOS softwares(that are more than capable of still doing it). The only thing I will update is my iPhone to iOS 14 and I don't even think that will solve my issue. I recall reading an article from the Apple website(don't have it anymore) directly addressing the backwards compatibility issue talking about if "you have iOS 10" you can do this on iOS 9, frankly I don't know how true that was because in my original scenario of iPhone on iOS 9 and iPad on iOS 10 it worked.

I may contact Apple. I just wanted to know if the issues were done on purpose so I can stop trying haha or if there is an error in Apple's system. I know Apple has disabled things in the past but they usually inform you that they are disabled not make them half working like my issue here.
