How to transfer photos/videos from Mac to external hard drive

I don't understand why this process has been so frustrating and complicated but I would really appreciate any help. I'm trying to export pictures/videos from Photo Library (on Mac) to my external hard drive (240 gb). On my iPhone all my pictures/videos take up 31 gb (6,545 photos, 1,229 videos). After an hour of all the items exporting, it gave me an error that 1 thousand items couldn't export. I noticed that there was no space left on my external hard drive so I know thats why it didn't finish. My question now is, why did the photos/videos that took up 30 gb on my iPhone turn into 150 gb on my Mac? I exported them as TIFF, which I thought was suppose to take up less space so I'm confused... Please, this is driving me crazy. I think I need to buy a whole new external hard drive.

Hi

I don't know where you got the information that TIFF takes up less space. Tiff takes up much more space than Jpeg. Jpeg takes more space than HEIC (Which is probably what your phone is storing). You will need to export in jpeg, or get a much bigger drive.

Depending on what you want to do with the exported images (for example - if you just want to make a backup), you could export unmodified originals, which should take the same space as on the phone (assuming you don't have optimised storage turned on on the phone). But bear in mind unmodified originals won't retain any edits, and exported heic files will not be usable in many applications.
