scatter plot in numbers

How do I create a y versus x line graph in Numbers? Sometimes it's called a scatter plot. My x values are not equally spaced.

Scatter Chart in Numbers I cannot create a Scatter Chart using the current version of Numbers. I select the column for the X axis (a date) and a different column for the Y axis (a number), and then click on Chart, then select Scatter Plot. The plot that is produced uses the same column of data for both X and Y axes, resulting in a straight line set of symbols. If I try to manually change the column for either the X or Y data it appears to do so, but then reverts to the original behavior. If I create a line plot for the same set of data, it is correct, so the data set is not the problem. I can provide a example spreadsheet if it would be useful. BTW, this issue originally came up when I tried to find out why a Numbers spreadsheet that had been producing a continuously updated scatter plot for over 10 years suddenly stopped working.

See the 'Scatter Chart' sheet (tab) in the 'Charting Basics' template at File > New in your menu.

Also see this page in the Numbers User Guide, that has step-by-step instructions for creating a scatter chart.

When you are making a scatterchart (as opposed to one of the "category" charts) make sure that none of the columns with data you are using in the chart are defined as Header Columns.
