4K HDR movies upgraded after purchase not showing in 4K HDR section of apple tv app

Some movies which I have access to in 4K/HDR do not show in the “4K HDR” section of the Apple TV app.

When I play one of these movies from my library in the Apple TV app (not from the 4K HDR section) these will play in HD, if I ask Siri to go to the movie and play it from there, it will play in 4K.

This appears to only occur with purchases I made in HD before the 4K version was available. All the purchases have been made directly through iTunes.

Is there a way to refresh the 4K HDR list? Restart has no impact. Thanks In advance for any help received.

Ok I fixed it somehow. I did several things but I think the last thing I tried was this:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > iTunes Movies and TV Shows
  2. Make sure Video Quality is set to "Best Available"
  3. Make sure Quick Start is set to "On"
  4. Play the Movie from the Apple TV App or the iTunes Movie app.

I had already done these things:

  • Changed the cable.
  • Went to Video and Audio > Format and tested the various settings here.
  • Went to Video and Audio > Match Content turned those off or on.
  • Went to Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection.
  • Went to Video and Audio > Reset the video settings.

I hope this helps!

Hello, Brannanana! Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you are not seeing the 4K version of certain movies in your library. We know that viewing your purchases in the best quality is important and we can certainly help.

The following Apple Support article should help you:

Find and watch movies with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos

Specifically, read the section titled: “Check the quality of your previous purchases”

This section states: “If you previously bought an HD movie from the Apple TV app, you might have access to the 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos enhancements on a compatible device. If your purchase doesn't have a high-quality version now, it might be added later.”

Instead of relying on the 4K/HDR section of your library, you can check the video quality options by tapping or clicking the movie in your library. Look towards the top of the movie to find the 4K, HDR, or Dolby icons.

We hope this information helps you view your purchases in the best quality available

Cheers!

I just rebooted and tried that and it did not work :-(

Now my Aliens movies are doing it. I know I bought the 4k version.

I know I bought Birds of Prey in 4k same thing.

Wonder Woman is fine. Nope it's been downgraded to HD.

What is going on?

Just tried this: Downgraded settings to 4k HDR, chroma 4:2:0 and they will all play fine using the native apps. However - this is interesting - it is playing HD HDR and not 4k HDR.

As I mentioned, the same movie will play the Dolby Vision version in Vudu just fine. Seems to be a bug in the TV (Apple TV) and Movie App.

hi there,

Thank you for the SIRI suggestion. I am going to try that.

I am having the same issue and it's not making any sense. I can play the same movie I purchased from iTunes in 4k DV or 4k HDR in the Vudu App, I can stream it from my phone to the Device/TV in 4k HDR and 4k DV, I can play it using Apple TV on Roku in 4k DV or 4K HDR.

Yet random movies seem to default back to HD, for no apparent reason, when using the TV App or the Movies App on the same Apple TV 4k. I was able to watch EndGame, two weeks ago, in 4k Dolby Vision. Now it is downgraded to HD. I purchased the 4k Dolby Vision version of Star Wars Ep 2 from iTunes and it plays in HD. However if I airplay from my phone they all play in 4k Dolby Vision.

I can't explain it.
