Boost phone transfer

Im shopping for a Christmas present for my kid.

Probably a new iPhone SE through Boost, as they have a nice deal going.

My question is, does boost lock these phones to their service like how some old carries used to do back in the day? Will, after a year of service with them will i be able to transfer service to another provider like Sprint, Verizon, Mint...?

Thank ya.

No one here works for Boost or Apple for that matter. Ask Boost this question directly. I will hazard a guess that if you are getting a great deal from Boost, they are likely going to lock the phone to their service until the phone is paid off or they have recouped their upfront subsidy.

You comment that carriers used to lock phones to their service? They still do anytime someone is buying a phone subsidized from the carrier.

It sounds very unlikely that the phone will be unlocked. Actually, only Apple sells unlocked phones, no one else does. So if you buy it from Boost it will be locked to Boost, there is no doubt about that. The next question is will they unlock it? That you must ask them and get it in writing, because sales people sometimes stretch the truth a bit. I have seen posts from other unhappy Boost customers when they couldn’t get their phones unlocked.

I was just looking for insights. I was burned once bad by AT&T when well after the contract expired the device would not activate on any other network.

I have asked Boost with mixed answers. Boost has no contract, so if what you are saying is accurate then after the first month of service I can cancel with Boost and then take my phone with me to whoever I want. Sweet.

So basically I can buy a $399 phone (apple price) for $249 (Boost price) for one month of Boost service @ $10.

Yes, it will be locked to Boost.

This is their unlocking policy:

General Eligibility for Unlocking

Boost Mobile will assist with unlocking a device under the following circumstances:

    • The device is SIM unlock capable
    • The device has not been reported as lost or stolen or otherwise flagged as ineligible to be unlocked
    • The device has been active on the associated account for at least 12 months
    • The associated account is active and in good standing

You can read the entire policy here: https://www.boostmobile.com/about/legal/ctia-regulatory.html
