Calendar item disappears when I lift my watch

OK, this is weird. I have the “Utility” face on an Apple Watch 6. I have my calendar items on the complication at the bottom of the face. They show when the watch is dimmed, but when I raise the watch the bottom complication — the calendar item — disappears!! That’s weird. Any ideas? I’ll try to reset, etc.
