Sony A7C RAW files blank

Hi there. I’ve just updated from my massive Canon 5Diii to the new Sony A7C. I’m still getting used to the new camera but have already run into an issue: Photos can’t read the RAW files from the camera, they just appear as blank rectangles. The Sony software reads the files properly, of course. I know I could switch to JPEG, use Sony’s software or something else to convert the files, but was hoping there might be a way to fix the issue with my ordinary workflow. I suspect I’m at the mercy of Apple updating their RAW support.

Hello there! Same problem here. As I understand it's more or less the same sensor as in A7S (which is supported) so hopefully support won't take long. Until then I found two solutions:

  1. Shoot RAW+JPG. Photos will import fine and display the jpg. Good enough for some quick adjustments as well. Although, when I find a favorite and want to go all RAW I simply export the original and open it in a compatible software (Luminar or Affinity Photo in my case). I make the edit and then import the result to Photos. Very simple and straightforward for 90% of times when I'm more or less satisfied with the jpg straight from the camera. Some hassle when I want to RAW, but hey, at least possible.
  2. Use Adobe's free DNG converter as suggested by Terence. Simple to edit any image, but some more hassle while importing.

OK, my bad!

But since iOS 14.4 is out, I tried this out of curiosity:

  1. Importing a Sony A7c raw file in Big Sur 11.1 Photos. It's a blank box, as expected.
  2. Waiting for iCloud Photo Library to sync.
  3. Looking at it on my iPhone running iOS 14.4. And... it's blank. Sorry.

So, the brand new iOS 14.4 clearly doesn't support these raw files. Therefore, I wouldn't expect the imminent Big Sur 11.2 to do so either. If my memory serves me, features like camera compatibility are usually pretty well synced between Apple's platforms (at least since Apple stopped releasing stand-alone raw compatibility updates for macOS).

I hope I'm wrong. The Sony A7c has been selling well since October. But my Sony ZV-1, launched before summer, isn't supported yet either, so...

Is your camera supported in the list here:

If so, do you have the latest version of the converter? Or at least the version equal or greater than the version of adobe camera raw required for your camera?

I just downloaded Abode DNG Converter 13.1 (available here). It supports Sony A7c raw (.ARW) and when I tried it worked just fine.

If you are taking loads of pictures, it might be good to know that the resulting DNG files are about 25 percent larger in file size.

The current version of Photoshop (and its' included Camera Raw) can also open A7c raw, but of course, the DNG Converter is free.

Now, we can only hope that the next Big Sur update (looking at 11.2) brings support for the A7c and other new cameras.

Big Sur does not yet support even Canon R6 .cr3. I use the dng converter for those but after editing to .jpg archive selected .cr3 anyway.

BTW, just the other day I wondered why some movies silently failed to import to Big Sur Photos when testing it (my main disk is still in Mojave). Then I noticed that they were Canon R6 HEVC .mp4 and the 4:2:2 is still incompatible with Photos (Big Sur QuickTime Player plays them after issuing an incompatibility warning -- Mojave QT Player refuses to open them and it wants also the hvc1 tag in HEVC).

Have a similar problem with my new Pentax KP. I was able to set the RAW output of the camera to DNG from default proprietary RAW file. Easier than converting, although I hope that apple will decide to add my camera to the list. Don't know if this solution works for your camera.

I just bought a sony zv-1. I am learning to use it and just switched to raw for the first time. My ARW photos also dont show up in photos. This is beyond disappointing. Its hard to understand how they would not do an update for this well selling camera.

could it be that they are not that eager to have raw photos going into icloud?

I don't think so because otherwise the RAW support is huge. And they are even pushing their own ProRAW now, right. Also more space is more money...

It's probably a matter of time. It will come sooner or later.

Until then I recommend you to shoot jpg+raw because then it will at least display in Photos (and iCloud). Then you are either able to convert the RAW-file to DNG, or open the RAW separately in a supported app like Luminar, Affinity, Photoshop or Lightroom.

I do the latter option and am quite OK with it at the moment actually. The update will come!
