Is it possible to use Apple TV to connect a MacBook Pro wirelessly to a monitor?

Hey there,

I recently bought a new monitor and now I am wondering if it is possible to connect my MacBook Pro wirelessly to my new monitor. (I love minimalistic setups, so no cable would be awesome). So my questions are:

  1. Is it possible to use any device connected to an Apple TV as a secondary screen for a MacBook?
  2. If yes, which generation of Apple TV is the first one to support AirPlay screen extension? The older the better I guess, because I want to buy the latest Apple TV anyways, but two of them would be quite pricey.
  3. If this works will it work with a MacBook Pro 2015? I am asking because using my iPad as a secondary display sadly does not work, because my MacBook is too old.
