My mom was having the same issue on her phone that's running iOS 14.2. I often experience issues as well whenever a new version of iOS comes out for apps I develop, forcing me to come up with workarounds. Here's how I resolved this particular issue.

* Go to Settings

* Scroll all the way down and tap Messenger

* Tap Photos, then select "All Photos" (my mom had "Selected Photos" checked)

* Back out, open Messenger, then try saving

Hope this helps.

Hello mineking1,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue saving photos sent to you in the Messenger app. Since this issue is related to a 3rd party app, there are a couple different actions you can try to correct the issue.

First, make sure the app is updated by visiting App Store > Account > Updates.

Second, you can quit the app and reload it. How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Third, delete and reinstall the app. You can choose to offload the app so you retain your app data, and just remove the app software only. For this, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messenger > Offload App. If you prefer to delete the app, simple long press the app icon until it starts to jiggle, then select Delete App. You can read more about this in article, How to delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

If you continue to experience issues, you'll want to reach out to the app developer for additional assistance.

Best regards.
