Apple TV, AirPlay and YouTube - no audio

Since the last week or so, I’ve been unable to get the YouTube app to play audio via any AirPlay device connected to my Apple TV.

I get about a split second of sound, then nothing. Every other app works fine, and YouTube works fine via the TV’s HDMI.

Anyone else having similar issues, or know the cause/fix?

Cheers.

2021 and problem still exists.

Im an ios developer so I’ve debugged some things.

Devices:

Apple TV non-4K release then beta TvOS

Apple TV 4K latest beta

Receivers:

Boston Acoustics legacy AirPlay speaker

Same Boston speaker in Bluetooth mode

Apple Legacy Airport express

HomePod

AirPods

Any combination with an AirPlay v1 device, the audio plays for a blip and stops.

That is to say, the HomePod and AirPods and Bluetooth works fine but the older third-party speaker an airport express receiver exhibit this audio glitch.

I’ve reinstalled the YouTube app and reset all data to no avail.

Only the YouTube app is effected.

Hulu, Netflix, Plex, CuriosityStream, Spotify all tested fine.

  • Changing bitrate - no change
  • forcing Apple TV audio mix down to stereo - no change; mono no change.

it’s my conclusion this is 100% YouTube code. That makes absolutely no sense to me because AirPlay is an operating system level feature. Yes, an app can configure certain options to be available or not such as picture and picture support, if airplay it allowed at all for videos etc. but beyond that configuration stage, audio buffers are just sent to coreaudio if they’re using their own code for decompression, or if they’re using the Apple video AVPlayer apis the audio is handled automagically.

If they’re serving H264 or H265 they absolutely should just use AV player. It allows completely custom controls and more, there’s no reason to write your own decoder/demuxer But with Google I wouldn’t be surprised if they insist on doing everything themselves.

I’ve written a lot of core audio Code for tvOS iOS and Mac including compatibility layers for the Xamarian and react native. I am absolutely baffled how you can actually break this in an app specifically in such an odd way but nothing with Google and iOS can surprise me anymore.

I’m almost impressed on how badly this is broken. Almost as impressed by the fact they completely are ignoring it for months now.

you know what does work all day enough though, AirPlay from iPhone YouTube video to a tvOS device but the audio to an AirPlay v1 is perfectly fine, but annoyingly laggy 🤦‍♂️

Yes! Using either an AirPort Express (to Bose Headphones) and An AirPort Express Second Edition

Everything works flawlessly, exept youTube. Even commercials - first 2 seconds.

I've done the usual

Close App

Remove/Reinstall App

Used signed in to you-tube

Before each I rebooted both apple devices (TV/Express)

It's gotta be YouTube

Two extra notes:

Someone thought that airplay wasn't recognized after Beta update. Freaked me out. It move to under the Home Button itself (where'd you go to tell it to sleep now). Instead of under Settings. NICE but not a mention of the move.

I've read that Airplay 2 doesn't work with the original Airport Express. I bought an Airport Express when I got a new pair of Logitec Speakers for my office. Set it up, speakers fine (except the same issue with youTube) and went to select, the older Airport was there! Now I can pick between TV sound and Headphones Easily.

BTW, I believe this isn't a license issue as I can stream from each Mac, MacBook Pro, & iPad Pro, with picture either local or on iTV and sound on either of the Airport Extreme devices with zero issue. Only 2 different set apple TV4, one on latest version, one on latest beta. I'm going to take a 3rd back to where it didn't know about Airplay 2 and see what happens sometime this week.

Last thing, When I had a motorcycle, the plate was Solaris. :). v2.3 was my first vsn. I did not transition to Oracle.

An excelent question. You may or may not have seen the issue with ONLY YouTube where the TV Remote isn't able to navigate until the Apple TV is reset. Works for a time, then does it again, but youTube insists it's apple, even though every other product works and the remote's firmware hasn't been upgraded in ages.

You tube is less responsive since acquired by Google. No clue how long it'll take, but I'll make a list of all the specifics once I go back far enough on the third Apple TV to where it works.

Partial But Unexplainable Success

The only live discussion on this issue within YouTube support is unanswered. However in YouTube's Debug Steps for Apple TV was something about surround sound speakers needing to have it set manually.

Starting with Airport Express Second Edition (The only of the two supported by Apple for Airplay 2)

Under Settings->Audio Format I selected Change Format and left format at default of Dolby Digital 5.1

IT WORKED!

Now the weird part. I selected the only other option under Change Format: Stereo

Still worked!

Then Changed Audio Format back to Automatic

Still worked.

None of this worked on the Airport Express. Fair because apple says it's not supported.

Maybe changing that format and changing it back was enough to set something that youTube needed. I'm going to assume that for now and research more.

The only way I can get the audio on the YouTube app working without cutting out after a few seconds is to turn the app off switch the audio on apple tv to the the device itself and not through airplay or airport express and then the audio works fine. It’s a pain though as I listen to all of the other apps through airport express and so need to remember to switch audio when about to use Youtube. I hope that helps!

I needed to do a firmware update on my airport express using Airport utility (iOS or MacOS), but it did not solve my youtube issues. All my other apps including "Youtube TV" (it is a different app by google) airplay though the Express perfectly fine. The only app that cuts out the audio after two seconds is Youtube. Thank you for the tip, but Im still stuck.

AndryAppleTVUser... thank you for reaching out with your experience. Probably you are trying to stream out YT videos... Maybe you should use YT app from within Bravia, directly to Beam... if supported of course.

I can not understand how Apple is not responding to this - at least - they should say: we (or Google) do not allow it... PERIOD. So we would know. Or offer some alternative. Instead of keeping us in the fog.

This is NOT a premium experience they push through the prices... This is a pushy attitude and it will influence many Apple users... Samsung is beating Apple with Ux on all major fields... Smart Home, TV's, watches, smartphones... THIS AINT PREMIUM EXPERIENCE ANYMORE!!! They fight against it with "privacy PR", which I do care about... but Apple also record Siri commands... i.e.

Definitely does not feel like a premium experience. After putting all of this money into Apple devices I’d expect them to work seamlessly.

My issue is with ALL audio from my Apple TV. I cannot airplay any audio from the Apple TV. It’s disappointing that audio over Airplay 2 from the ATV to my Beam doesn’t work. EVEN MORE disappointing because I would expect Airplay 2 to at least work easily with Apple’s own products (my HomePod), but I lose audio when I try.

I have exactly the same problem! The YouTube sound for a few second then no sound since the late 2020.

I am able to fix it by updating the firmware of Airport Express to the latest version of 7.8.1 which support Airplay 2.

I Airplay the sound from Apple TV 4K to Airport Express which was running firmware 7.6.9 (Airplay 1) before. I therefore suspecting that YouTube app is supporting Airplay 2 only from that moment. To confirm it is the issue of version of Airplay, the HomePod is able to produce sound throughout Airplay from Apple TV 4K with YouTube app.

Dilemma in choosing firmware version!

When I play music from Calm Radio app, I need to downgrade the firmware of Airport Express to 7.6.9 (Airplay 1) as it had no sound on 7.8.1 (Airplay 2)!

The Apple Music to Airport Express doesn’t sound good on 7.8.1 (Airplay 2) as well. Distorted treble sound occasionally, especially Piano, not to mention skipped sound when playing the next track.
