IPhone 5 stuck on data transfer

I was trying to transfer data from my older iPhone 5s to a newer one via backup on Windows using iTunes. It got stuck with this screen and I haven't been able to resolve it.

I tried the several solutions that have been posted here and elsewhere, but these seem to be for "Preparing to transfer". The screen below suggests I was using the phone to phone transfer, but I've rebooted both phones to no avail.

What I think i really need is an old-fashioned factory reboot by sticking a pin in the side of the device. However no such solution on iPhones. Factory reboot using itunes not possible because I can't get out of the screen below. When i press the home button I see a cancel button in top left, but it does nothing.

The newer phone belongs to my wife, so no issue with ID but can't got to that screen.

Neither of these work. I even tried disabling all connectivity because it's obviously looking for something (spinning ball). No joy. There must be some way to totally disable a phone, even if I have to open the case?

Howdy apptoonz,

It looks like your iPhone paused in the middle of transferring data. If you tap the home button, does it give you an option to erase the device and start again? If so, we recommend following that path and them attempting to transfer again.

If you're not given the option, we instead recommend following the following steps using a computer: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
