turn off face recognition iPhone 12

Is it possible to turn off face recognition on the new iPhone - ie use passcode only to enter and use the device?

In this age of the requirement to wear masks inside (shops, restaurants etc) it would be more efficient if access to iPhone as well as (say) applepay was available without facial recognition but by using a passcode so you don't have to remove mask to use / pay with phone.

thanks

You do not have to activate Face ID if you do not want to. However, under the newer iOS, if you attempt to unlock the phone with Face ID and your face is blocked by a mask, the iPhone will quickly move to passcode entry. That is also the same for Apple Pay. I do it all the time now. If Face ID will not work, you can select Use Passcode and enter the passcode. If you are initially unlocking the phone if Face ID fails, then it will display the passcode screen right away.
