ALL GREY STORAGE BAR

I’ve recently got my new ipad (7th gen) and when i go to storage, the bar is not color coded like it needs to be... it just expands and returns to its original shape, is there something wrong with it?? how do i get the color codes back?

Good luck. I have been talking to Apple Support about this same issue since November 17th. Brand new iPhone 11 and still have no color bar even after rebuilding and restoring the phone from new. Same issue on my iPhone 8 after iOS 14 update. After almost 2 weeks of back and forth they claim it's a software issue. That I can either keep trying "factory resets" to "see" if the colors come back or "just wait" for a software update that will hopefully rectify the issue that apparently a handful of users are having.

Hi there, Willowoop! Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. We know that you must be eager to view the most accurate information about your iPad’s storage settings and we’re happy to help you.

To get started, we want to be sure that you have the best steps for viewing your iPad’s storage details. If you are not seeing accurate information from the Settings app on your device, you can check your storage using a computer instead. Pay special attention to the section titled: “Use Finder or iTunes to check the storage on your iOS device”:

How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

If you continue to notice the same issue after this, we’d suggest restarting your device. Please follow these steps when restarting:

Restart your iPad

If you notice that "Other" files are using most of your device storage at this time, the following Apple Resource includes troubleshooting steps that can help you:

Clear Other storage on your iPhone or iPad

We hope that this information helps you view your storage details accurately.

Cheers!

I can confirm that deleting the "Shortcuts" App is one of the culprits of this issue - for me. On my iPhone 12 with iOS 14.5, AFTER I deleted the Shortcuts App, my Storage Category bar became all grey. Then I tested it on my iPad with iPadOS 14.5:

  • First verified that the Storage Category bar was OK and colored
  • Deleted the Shortcuts App > Stayed colored
  • Rebooted > Became all grey!!!

Subsequently tested it in an older spare iPhone on iOS 14.3, same exact result where upon deleting the Shortcuts App and rebooting the device, the bar became all grey.

More detail: When this happens, at the very bottom of iPhone Storage screen, taping on "Other" shows Zero KB for "Other System Data". I believe this is causing it. So in conclusion, somehow deleting the Shortcuts App messes up the "Other System Data" size, causing the Storage Category bar to remain confused and grey.

Edit1: Reinstalling the Shortcuts App does not resolve it. Will post other attempts at resolution ...

Update to my prior post - 3 posts above this - Resolution found.

Problem description: iPhone/iPad's Storage Category bar is all grey! Deleting the Shortcuts App causes the iPhone/iPad storage's "Other System Data" to become Zero KB, and results the Storage Category bar to become confused and all grey color. Don't delete the Shortcuts App! Tested on various iOS 14.x and devices with same results (including iOS 14.5 and iPhone 12).

  • Reinstalling the Shortcuts App does NOT resolve it
  • "Reset All Settings" does NOT resolve it
  • "Erase All Content and Settings" RESOLVES it and seems to be the only solution to my knowledge.

NOTE: After the erase procedure and the basic vanilla OS install (without any personalization), I deleted the Shortcuts App again (to test) and the bar became grey. This is a bug that is easily reproduceable.

I’m glad to see that it’s just not my phone because I’ve tried deleting all my apps, restarting settings, and powering off my phone. I thought it was like a new feature or something but I checked my brother phone Bc we have the same phone and he didn’t have the problem I was facing. I think a software update will fix it. If not we better get new phones Bc my phone is only 3 months old I shouldn’t be facing this problem so early.

Aslında tam olarak çözüm değil. Tekrar geri yükleyince düzelmiyor. Sıfır kurulum yaptıktan sonra kestirmeleri silmezseniz problem ortaya çıkmıyor. Silerseniz sildikten sonra telefonu sıfırlamadan geri yükleseniz dahi düzelmiyor. Dün yeni güncelleme geldi belki düzeltmişlerdir. Apple la görüşmeme rağmen bir çözüme ulaşamadık. O yüzden üstüne düşmüyorum pek

Mine turned all gray after attempting to deleted “others”. After resetting my phone, the colors and graphs were back.

But, after I turned off my phone to sleep and turn on this morning, it went all gray again.

My assumption to this is the phone is having a hard time calculating the storage. It says the total storage but is having a difficulty in dividing it into section. Don’t worry, it functions fine. It’s just a little bit odd not to see the graphs.

Some says it also has something to do with the update. Which is possible because mine turned like this only yesterday. I updated it only few days ago. Don’t worry, it functions well. It’s just a little bit odd not to see the graphs.

I have the exact same issue. It happened after I restored my iPhone in order to solve a different issue. I also noticed my backup on iCloud was way smaller than it should be, and no matter how many times I manually backed up to iCloud it wouldn't fix itself. I deleted the backup file and now am backing up manually again, and I think this will solve that issue because already it's taking longer and the file is larger. As for the grey bar, I don't know if it's related at all to it, but I'll check after the backup is done to see if that issue was also restored.

I also noticed that the same issue does not happen in iTunes, where the bar is properly coloured and divided in categories.

The easiest fix is to (a) Reinstall the shortcuts app now and then (b) install any current or new iOS update. That will fix it.

.

If you are already up-to-date with your iOS, just wait until the next one comes out and install it - it appears that 14.6 might be released soon. Once all resolved, if you still want to save space you can optionally "Offload" (but do not delete) the Shortcuts App if you wish without any issues. If this resolved your issue, please mark this "Helpful" so that others can benefit from it. Thank you.

Yes, an iOS update will bring it back to normal. I second what Nate wrote. And if you are short in space, you can alternatively "Offload App" (Settings > Storage), but don't delete it. This is such a minor and rare issue that it may be a long while for Apple to fully fix it.

I also have 17 MB in Messages, but noch Messages. This has something to do with this issue.
