Update Request El Capitan - iPhone7

I am running El Capitan 10.11.6 on my laptop and do not want to update because of programs on my laptop that will not be supported if I do. I am being asked to update when I connect my iphone 7 -14.01 with iTunes. Is Apple referring to the main operating system or an update specifically to allow the phone to work. Thanks

It will be an update for iTunes only to support the new OS on your iPhone. It will not update your entire operating system.

And no, there is no current requirement to update to Catalina,. and iTunes is not obsolete at all.

macOS versions lower than Catalina, and Windows still use iTunes and is still supported just fine on them.

Hello,

Yes, iTunes is now obsolete on Mac computers. The new method is to use Finder when connecting your phone.

In your situation, you probably will not be able to use iTunes or Finder until your Mac is updated to Catalina etc. If you are trying to use iTunes for backup purposes, you'll have to try a get by with iCloud backups for now.

Perhaps someone else will have other ideas. Sorry.

Good luck.
