What do you mean by "status of messaging"?
On its own the iPad can send and receive iMessages (blue bubbles) to other Apple device users that have activated the iMessage feature.

If you need to send SMS messages to non Apple devices or Apple devices that do not use iMessage, you will need a paired iPhone.
