What is the best external storage device to store photos and free up space on my macbook air?

The photos on my MacBook air are taking up the majority of space on my MacBook air. I purchased an external hargrove (seagate) but it is very difficult/impossible to back up my photos on this device.

What is the best way to store my photos so I can remove them off of my laptop?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Hard Drive:

Use a Solid State Drive (SSD) that is 1.5 times the storage capacity of all of these photos. A SSD no moving parts, it reads writes data at a much faster Data Transfer Rate(DTR) than a Hard Disk Drive(HDD) does, and is less prone to failure.

External drives just used as storage/backup do not need to be superfast - SSDs are far more expensive than a spinning drive. I’d recommend a 7200 rpm drive which is just fine. I would suggest an SSD if you intend to use it for your startup drive. As for drives, take a look at the Mercury Elite pro external drives from OWC ( macsales.com) - good quality and excellent customer support.

Note: whatever drive you buy, any included software is irrelevant and unnecessary, so, you need to format it anyway which will erase it during that process.
