Ventura Behavior Changed: Photos Upload Dialog - Can't See Folders and Albums, only the entire Library.

When I attempt to upload photos to Smugmug via its Web interface, I click "browse this computer" and a Finder-ish dialog pops up. Prior to Ventura, when I click on "Photos" under "Media" in the left side pane, it would bring up a new pane that had at the top, the Apple Photos color-wheel icon, with a dropdown that showed my Apple Photos Folder and Album structure. I could navigate to a Photos Folder / Album, select the photos from that album I wanted and they would upload. Now in Ventura, the behavior changed. In Ventura when I click "browse this computer" on the same Smugmug interface, the Finder-ish dialog pop-up still shows "Photos" under "Media", but I do not have the option of navigating through my Apple Photos Folders and Albums. I only see a view equivalent to Library / Photos in Apple Photos. There is a blue folder saying Photos at the top, no color-wheel, and no Folder/Album structure, and no way to navigate to a particular Album in Apple Photos. I want to see the Folder / Album information so I can easily find the photos I have already organized into albums and not have to pick through my entire library. I have tried Safari and Chrome with the same result. How can this functionality be restored in Ventura?

I was told by Apple today it's not going to be "fixed", that they have purposely removed it. They had me fill in a request asking to consider reinstating it. For those of us running businesses this is crazy. Saving them to a file or sharing still does not fix as it won't allow to set the order of the photos. I am searching for an app to add.

I would suggest your information is correct. I spent over an hour on the phone with apple a while back. It took getting to a supervisor but she was clear they had removed it. She said it was causing a huge backlash and that people should file a request feature report (not a bug report ). And that possibly with enough feedback Apple would reinstate it. So there is reason to continue to discuss it and encourage people to report. And people are asking if anyone found a work around, not fix the problem. I am replying to both of the last posts and there was no reason for Yer_man to reply in that manner. Let's be civil or silent.

Some applications are still showing the list of albums in the photo picker (Media > Photos) in Ventura, for example Mail or Pages, but I also cannot get the sidebar with the albums to show in Safari or any other web browser any longer, and neither in Preview. You may want to send feedback to Apple with a bug report: Feedback - Photos - Apple

to find a photo to upload in Safari I am currently using the search field, when the photo picker appears. I open the Photos.app to look up the filename of the image I want o upload, then enter the filename in the search field in the photo picker to find the image.

I don't think it's going to be fixed. I'm currently in Madison WI and yesterday, I took my MacBook Pro into Graphite, which is an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The Technical Specialist thought he could help me but after going into the back to discuss it with some of the other techs and checking with Apple Support, he came back to say Apple deemed it a security issue and decided to disable the application. Apparently, Apple has decided that all of us with our photos are running the risk of having our photos stolen/used and the company did not want to be hauled into court.

I find it despicable that they have crippled their millions of Mac owners without ever giving us the opportunity to opt out of updating to Ventura because they were worried about losing money over a security issue and wanted to cover their collective butts.

Yes, you could drag and drop, you could rename all of your files...but I ask you, how much TIME and ENERGY do you have to do that?? I know I don't. I've always sung the praises of Apple but I am disgusted by their disingenuous screw job and if and when I have to replace my current laptop, I doubt I'll buy another Apple product.

I contacted Apple about this issue a couple days ago. Their conclusion was that I use the drop and drag feature. I have a business. I do not want to rifle through thousands of photos to up load ? number of photos. Wasn't the whole purpose of sorting and categorizing Photos into folders to make them accessible. It's almost like having a new program -- say FreeForm -- that is pretty much useless on a iMac.

This is totally ridiculous, since they’ve basically taken away from Ventura users the way that Photos also works on iPhones and iPads. It had worked pretty much the same on all platforms until now.

And use drag and drop? I had to admit that I hadn’t thought of that, and while it does work, it either requires a lot of screen real estate or for you to drag the Photos window way down in order for you to drag the particular photo into the right place in the other app.

What a pain.

And yes…searching for the filename of the photo or photos works if you can remember them. Hmm…I guess the trick here is that when you create an album to name the photos with a prefix that indicates the album they’re in. Then when you search for them you can find them easily.

Again…what a pain!

@Richard.Taylor: No, you can't "just search on the album name". But, I could be wrong, please explain.

In Ventura, on whatever site I am trying to upload to I click "Browse Computer" (or equivalent) then get Apple's pop-up window. (At any time, typing an Album name in the upper-right search box yields nothing ... whether "This Mac" or "Pictures" is selected for the Search option). On the left bar, clicking "Photos" under "Media" brings up the thousands of pictures in my library, but no option to view the Folders and Albums that my photos have been carefully organized into. "Search" seems to look at Filenames, Keywords, Places, Named faces etc. but NOT the Album names or Folder Names where I have organized my photos.

On my old Mac-Mini that can't be upgraded beyond Catalina, no problem. The albums are all visible when I click Media/Photos. Easy. It does what a computer is supposed to do, make things efficient.

So, the Mac-Mini stays on my desk and Apple loses out on a sale of a new system specifically because of this behavior. OK, now we are talking about the bottom line Apple, listening yet?

Those of you recommending sending Apple "Feature Requests" etc., please re-post the URL(s) where you recommend doing this.

As a work-around to this supposed security risk, It would be helpful if Apple would implement a feature to "Add Album Name to Keyword" for all photos inside that album. Click once, done - no copy/paste errors etc. But this is still extra work compared to how things work in Catalina.

Thanks.

Searching for keywords is working very well for me - perhaps Spotlight has not yet finished the indexing of your keywords.

Viewing the "Media > Photos" view in the File chooser dialog, entering a keyword will find the photos with this keyword.

But since yesterday, after I installed a security update, there are new glitches. Unless I open Photos, before I try to click "Media > Photos", I cannot even open the media Browser. And frequently the search field is dead and does not allow to enter a query at all. I have to restart Photos and the app using the Media Browser frequently.
