How do I “Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage.”? IPadOS 13.7, iPad Pro 10.5-inch.

My basic problem is that iMessage (and FaceTime) have become disabled on my iPad. I found the article about this problem, and one of the first steps is “”Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage.“ When I go to Settings > Messages (or Settings > FaceTime), there is no switch to turn off the app. It automatically goes into a “verification”, which goes on a long time and locks up the Settings app until it’s done. Then I get the message saying “Unable to contact the iMessage server. Try again.” If I try to reactivate within the app itself, it again goes away for a long time and I get the same message. I have restarted my iPad; no change in symptoms. So I looked for instructions, found this article, and now don’t seem to have the option to take the first action suggested.

Anyone else having the same problem? I’m assuming so since the article exists and was just published a few months ago...

Thanks!!!

I talked to Apple Support. Their response: update to iPadOS 14.1.

Very disappointing. If I was running 12.x, I'd understand. But I'm running the latest version of 13.x. That shouldn't be off the rails yet!!!

Will update this once I've taken the leap to 14.x.

Hi, @DotMacAlias,

I re-read your earlier reply and saw the further details at the bottom.

The settings are linked. You would definitely want to have the main iCloud settings show with Messages enabled.

Then on the Messages settings, since it is still prompting you for a login, you'll somehow need to satisfy the login / get through the verification step.

You may be stuck because of 2-factor authentication. You can check to see if 2FA is enabled by going here:

https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage

If 2FA is enabled, "verification" likely means some other device is asking for verification, which you would have to respond to and enter a six-digit code.

If 2FA is not enabled, could it have been enabled in the past? Maybe there is some remnant there left over.

If you would like to try toggling 2FA off, AFAICT you would need to contact Apple Support by opening a case.

Of course Apple will likely have other ideas as to what is blocking your login to iCloud from the Messages settings screen.

Hi, @DotMacAlias.

That definitely should not be happening. In settings you should see something like the following:

Based on the behavior that you described, I would suspect that the issue is at the overarching iCloud level.

Have you gone to Settings -> (Your Name at the top) -> iCloud and checked that the status for Messages is enabled?

That should look something like this:

I completely agree that the above is what it *should* look like! Instead, I have this:

(The black oval contains my Apple ID, which was auto-filled on the screen. I'm paranoid...)

Regarding the iCloud settings, I have explicitly turned off iMessages in iCloud in the hope that having it on was part of the problem. No change in symptoms whether it's off or on. It's my understanding that having this turned on simply allows me to see my MMS/SMS messages on my WiFi-only iPad. When this option initially appeared (many OS revisions ago) it was off by default. I could see only my iMessages on my iPad at that point. When I turned it on, I got everything, which is lovely. At this point, I have nothing!!!

All help is appreciated.

Your screenshot implies authentication to iCloud has been lost, at least for Messages.

And so when you attempt to sign-in from the Messages screen, that's when you get the "verification" process that doesn't work?

Did you check the other iCloud screen that I pasted? Is that screen showing that you are logged into iCloud and is the Messages option enabled? Did you try toggling messages there?

2-factor authentication is on. The code would go to my phone, iMac, or maybe watch. They're all right in front of me and no code is being sent.

Yes, I've disabled iMessages in iCloud, rebooted my iPad, re-enabled iMessages in iCloud. Same symptoms.

I agree with this: "you'll somehow need to satisfy the login / get through the verification step." That is the core of the problem. That is why I created this thread. Hopefully, between all of us, someone will come up with something that allows me to get through this.

Apple Support is my next stop.

You asked whether the screen shown in your second screen shot indicates that I'm signed in to iCloud. Yes, it does. All other iCloud services are functional. It's just iMessage and FaceTime. I've focused on iMessage in this thread, but FaceTime has all the same symptoms. (Note that FaceTime has no iCloud settings.) Everything else is fine.

I updated. iMessage and FaceTime can now authenticate.

New issue: When I send a message from the iPad (WiFi only) to a non-Apple recipient, the message is in fact sent successfully via my phone. I can see it on the phone. However, the iPad is not notified and it indicates that the message failed. New messages received on this conversation do not appear on the iPad.

Before I contact Apple Support again I'll update my phone. I'm confident that will be their first suggestion. It seems that backward compatibility is a thing of the past.

Hi again, @DotMacAlias.

Glad you are making progress.

You don't need to contact support for the related issue.

Whether text messages get shared to other devices over iCloud is actually controlled on your phone, since for a non-apple text message (actual text/SMS over cellular), it's your phone that receives it (vs. Apple to Apple devices, it's all handled within iCloud). So you have to give permission on your phone to allow the phone to essentially forward it over iCloud to your other devices.

On your phone go to Settings -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding.

You should see all the Messages-capable devices which are joined to your iCloud and you can toggle them on/off individually for text forwarding.

Even sending from iPad and seeing the message "coming back" is governed by this setting.

If on the phone the iPad isn't toggled on for text forwarding, you can send, but it on the iPad, because the phone won't share it back to the iPad. I can see how that does seem a bit strange, but that's how it works.

HTH.

I've now updated everything, and it's all working. The settings were all correct. This was all working prior to Oct 19th, so I didn't expect to find any issues with settings.

When this started, all of my devices were at a consistent level. Having that come off the rails is not something that should happen when working with a flagship software vendor like Apple. Backward compatibility is hard. I realize that. I participated in large, distributed embedded software programs for many years as a developer, manager, and program manager. I hired software development managers that had previously worked at Apple, so I know how their managers are trained. It's not pretty.

Maybe some day quality will become a priority again. I'm not going to hold my breath.
