I have a 2014 Mac Book Air, and am looking to buy a new one, or maybe a pro.
My 2014 MBA has a 1.4 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5.
The 2020 MBA has a choice of 1.1 GHz i3, 1.1 GHz i5, or 1.2 GHz i7.
Am I missing something? Why are they using slower chips now compared to 6 years ago?
Even the pro runs a 1.4 GHz i5, unless you pay almost £2000 for the 2GHz version.

Taken by itself a CPU's clock speed is meaningless.
Quoting from What Is Clock Speed?
"For example, a CPU with a higher clock speed from five years ago might be outperformed by a new CPU with a lower clock speed, as the newer architecture deals with instructions more efficiently."
Every 2020 MBA's performance will exceed that of your 2014 model.
Specifically the i3 model is 67% faster and the i7 is 138% faster.
