Why has Numbers stop working on my iPad Air with IOS 12.4.8?

Numbers is no longer working on my iPad Air. The app used to work just fine until it was automatically updated by Apple. I have the latest IOS installed for this iPad which is 12.4.8. Cannot install IOS 13 which is required for the new Numbers app to work. Very frustrating and unacceptable that apple leaves older products behind.
