Unable to transfer of files from camera or memory cards to my iPad or iPhone

I'm using Apple's USB 3 to lightning adapter(the one that has a lightning pass thru for charging)to transfer videos either directly from my camera or from a SD card reader. The problems I'm having is:

  1. I get a message on the iPad saying that the device requires more power(or something like that). However, I already have my iPad charger connected to the adapter.
  2. The Photos app has difficulty reading either my camera or the card connected
  3. When it does recognize the camera or card, it keeps dropping the connection thus unable to complete the transfer after maybe one or two files. I have to repeat the process several times just to transfer a few files.

I did not have any issues when I first got the adapter. My 6th gen iPad is on iPad OS 14.0.1. Might be a coincidence, but this problem seems to occur after one of the OS updates. All cables used are the original Apple white except the one that connects to my camera which is a USB-A to microUSB. Same problem when connected to my iPhone 8(OS 14.0.1)

How large is your memory card? Is it an older one?

Have you tried a powered USB hub? Some have had success with that over the years.

As far as I know there is no documentation for this, but I’ve personally experienced my older SD cards able to upload videos to my ipad but the newer ones (SDHC or SDXC perhaps) will not upload the video off the card, so there may be an issue with a card reader not working with the newer compression, or with a large SD card. I think 32 gig is the max I’ve ever tried to plug in.

Way back when I tried to do an experiment with a collection of flash drives I had and out of the 14 I had, only half of them worked and there was no standard size or brand....which just contributes to this conversation in that plugging in peripherals has been a very uncertain thing for years.

There may be an issue brought about with iOS/iPadOS14, but try to take the camera out of it. Just use the SD card reader. That will simplify a lot

You may also want to get the direct card reader, meaning if your ipad is a lightning ipad, get the lightning SD card reader. I use that occasionally (granted not since 14 came out) and other than sometimes not reading videos, it’s worked fine over all.

Thanks for your input. In troubleshooting the issue I’ve tried a variety of scenarios and one of the first is to remove the camera from the equation - nil fix. Tried a different card reader, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, supplied power via the iPad charger, 10000mAh Anker PD powerbank. I’ve not tried it on an iPad Pro, but this adapter is supposed to work with my 6th gen iPad.

Thanks for the additional insight. I think you've got a point there and I'll have to re-try transfering files from different microSD cards to see if it makes a difference. The one that I'm currently having issues with is a Samsung EVO Plus 256GB card thats in the recommended list of the camera manufacturer.

I'll update my findings after trying the other cards that I have.
