CarPlay and playlist greyed out

Does anyone know how to use the touchscreen to select your custom playlist when the car is driving. iOS 13 allowed you to do this, but since I have upgraded to iOS 14 the playlist is grayed out when the car is moving. Even my passenger can’t select it. This is a major bug and/or flaw. Using Siri to play music from your playlist is an absolute pain. The only options is to stop the car which is not feasible or go to my iphone and select the playlist  which is dangerous. I’m driving a 2020 Toyota RAV4 and I have an Apple Music subscription.

Hi Benoit6,

When you navigate to Settings > Music is 'Show Apple Music' enabled? If so, try disabling it and testing it out with your RAV4. Given the vehicle and iOS 14.1 is still pretty new, were you using iOS 13 with the same RAV4?

Are you able to play the playlists when you ask Siri with CarPlay? Learn how here: Use CarPlay with your iPhone under section, "Use Siri to control CarPlay".

Did you try to enable Do Not Disturb While Driving and then disable it again? If not, that's something we'd test out. It seems related, since this only happens when you're in the car and driving.

Lastly, do you have another iPhone running iOS 14.1 that you can test with the RAV4? Or another vehicle that you could test with your iPhone 11? That would really help to isolate it much further.

Have a wonderful day, cheers!

Hi Ben,

It sounds like you've tested the issue down to your iPhone. If you can't test it out with another vehicle, you may want to contact the manufacturer of your vehicle to make sure their system has the newest updates to ensure it's compatible for the iOS 14 software.

In case it's up to date, then it probably would be best to Contact Apple Support

Hoping for a quick solution for you, be well!

Hello .. Do Not Disturb While Driving is turned off and the music in my playlist is downloaded to my phone via iTunes. Yes I still use iTunes lol. Again I didn’t have this problem with ios13. My playlist wasn’t ever grayed out regardless if the car was driving or not.

I am one of those people who don’t do updates because of situation like this. I should have kept iOS 13. I’m using iOS 14.1 on an iPhone 11.

Hey Ben,

Thanks for posting! It sounds like you're unable to change playlists when the car is moving, since it's greyed or dimmed out. We'll do our best to help out with this.

First of all, your safety and your passengers' safety is top priority. Always ensure that you test the following with a passenger to handle it instead of the driver. It could be fun to take a drive and test things out!

Does this only happen when you have Do Not Disturb While Driving enabled? The passenger can turn off this feature while you drive to test it out: How to use Do Not Disturb While Driving You could always create a shortcut for this feature in Control Center to make it easier to test. Check under section, "Turn it on and off in Control Center".

If you're using CarPlay, since it's supported with your 2020 RAV4, then try out: If you need help with CarPlay

Lastly, make sure the content you attempt to play is already downloaded. Not streaming, since this could be related to those cellular settings. (If this only happens when streaming the playlists, then you can enable cellular in Settings > Cellular > Music and/or Settings > Music > Cellular Data.)

Let us know if this helps out!

Wishing you the best and be safe out there, take care!

Hello, I don’t see a ‘Show Apple Music’ in my music settings.

Yes, I can ask Siri to select a playlist but that an inconvenience. And of course that will only work with my voice.

I did use another iPhone (6s) that is running iOS 13.5 and that doesn’t grey out the playlist when the car is moving like iOS 14. I don’t have another vehicle that I can try it on.

Also, I did enabled and disabled Do Not Disturb While Driving but didn’t remedy the issue.
