Hey there! I’ve seen this after the update as well, I think HP drivers are out of date and need to be updated to work. Here’s what worked:

First, if updating the software manually doesn’t work:

Open Finder, on the top menu hit Go > Computer > Macintosh HD (Usually) > Library > Printers.

Save (If you need to, and Delete the HP folder from there, (You’ll notice when clicking “Show in Finder” when you get the errors, these are where the files are, in this case old, outdated drivers and files).

Once deleted, open System Preferences > Printers and Scanners.

Right click (or Control click) select “Reset Printing System”, (This will delete any existing Printers and Scanners).

Once done:

If USB Printer, dis connect/re connect, you may see the option to “Install” the new HP software.

If a wireless “AirPrinter”, just hit the “+” sign to re-add the printer and select “Add”.

Do a test print to make sure it’s working again!

This is Gatekeeper, Mac’s security doing its job, most likely if you’re getting that error message, it’s a good thing to remove the older software.

Hope it all goes well!

I can't print via the HP driver, generic PCL, generic IPP, PostScript.

What I can do is flip open an old Mac running a pre-2014 HP driver on Mac OS 10.9, and share the printer for my newer Macs.

That's done in System Preferences>Sharing on the old computer. You can turn on Printer Sharing for as many printers as you like.

On the new computer, make a new printer and select the shared printer, which will be the name on the old Mac "@" the name of the old Mac. Use the appropriate HP driver.

I get all the same printer features!

I'm printing to my HP CLJ3600. Your mileage may vary.

I just had an online Chat with Apple Support. They told me to reset my printer system:

System Preferences

Printers & Scanners

Hold Control key while on list of printers and click "Reset printing system."

This will delete all your printers.

Then re-install your printer. Here's an article with instructions:

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/add-a-printer-on-mac-mh14004/10.15/mac/10.15

I did this and now I can print. I still get the annoying error message, but once I click OK, my document prints.

It was a little disconcerting that the person I chatted with had not heard of this problem. Seems major to me.

Good night and good luck, everyone!

Using "Generic PostScript Printer" will work, but it's a temporary fix, not a permanent solution. Using a general-purpose PS driver, you will not get all of the printer-specific options in the Print dialog that you may require.

A link to updated drivers on HP's FTP site has been posted here a number of times. I've also had a notification of 'new' v5.1. drivers in System Preferences > Software Updates, which seem to work.

I've also had this problem. I also had the problem of not being able to print to an HP Laserjet 1320 which is an older printer. I resolved both issues as of now with two steps.

  1. I reinstalled the HP 5.1 driver package from the Apple support site as of this morning. This eliminated the error messages shown above.
  2. I added my HP Laserjet 1320 back but selected the "Generic HP PCL Printer Driver" in the "Use" entry of the "Add" dialog. I've checked and it appears to work as it did before. I have not checked to see if the "Generic Postscript Driver" works.

I spend all weekend trying to resolve this printing issue. It would be nice to hear what HP plans to do about it. At least to let the community know that they are aware of the impact that this is having on the masses.

I had the same no print issues as everyone else here. I deleted all my Hp software, removed printer from system preferences , reinstalled and chose air print from the kind drop down menu. You can check supply levels right from system preferences and scan is now working thru system preferences or image capture also. This was an Hp office jet pro 8710 that was wirelessly connected to my iMac. Everything is working perfectly now with no Hp drivers at all.

So this article gives the explanation of why this error is coming up: https://www.slashgear.com/macs-label-hp-printer-drivers-as-malware-breaks-printing-for-some-25644330/

You'll need to use AirPrint. If you have an older model of printer this likely won't work. I tried it today on an old HP LJ P2055dn and that model doesn't have AirPrint so it didn't work. I did try all of the other options to add the printer via IP but none worked.

Will check back if anyone else finds a solution.

To the best of my limited understanding somewhere between Apple and HP a certificate was wrongfully labeled as Malware. Rendering ALL HP printers useless on Macs once updated. I was initially relieved it wasn't a virus. But I've done everything they've asked to restore it with no luck. NOTHING is updating right, nothing is running right. Part of my is suspicious its more than they are saying but they don't want us to panic. But a computer without a printer is worthless to me and I'm ready to go buy a PC

I have a very old HP printer (HP LaserJet 1320) & I can share what worked for me.

  1. Delete the printer on the Printers & Scanners screen is System Preferences
  2. Delete the "hp" folder that shows up when you click "Show in Folder" on the error screen (it's 2 steps up in the folder hierarchy for me)
  3. Disconnect & Reconnect the printer to your computer
  4. The printer automatically showed up again for me and it asked to install an updated driver (5.1) which I did

After that, it started working fine again. Given how old my HP printer is (circa 2004), I think it should work for a lot of people. Hope this helps.
