I get the message

when trying to scan

I use a HP Photosmart C4180

Please help ...

Sorry you have to have this bad experience, Harry. Very often when an operating system is either updated or upgraded, it is necessary to download compliant printer drivers. Normally that should quickly solve the problem. Try it and let us know what results. It is up to the printer manufacturers to provide compatible drivers, not Apple. They do not have access to the printer's software, let alone be able to deal with the thousands of various model printers out there.

I had the same problem with my Epson Perfection V600.

I've not seen a reply so here is the way I overcame the problem:

  • open System Preferences.
  • click on Printers & Scanners - it just showed my printers
  • click on '+' to add a device and select my scanner
  • select the scanner in the list of printers and scanners.
  • click on 'Open Scanner' to start the scanner and scan a document.
