Message capacity in iCloud reducing storage

My iCloud storage shows as 2.8GB in iCloud, yet when I go in to 'manage storage' and view 'Messages', I have 280MB in top conversations.

How can I trim this storage size down without losing everything?

You can go into your messages and remove attachments, and also -- Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support.
