itunes not detecting iphone 12

Hey guys, just got my iphone 12 (previous phone was iphone 8), but itunes is not detecting the iphone 12. I'm trying to transfer all the data, texts etc from the iphone 8 to 12 but whenever I connect the 12 to my windows PC it just doesn't detect in itunes. My PC detects it - I can see it in my files and it is in device manager, but itunes just doesn't recognise it. itunes is up to date with the latest version and it still detects my iphone 8 when I plug that in. I tried power cycling the phone and even uninstalling/re-installing itunes but no luck .. tried it in different USB ports as well which is the only thing which makes a slight difference. In one USB port its like it detects it for a brief moment then its gone, all other ports it never appears in itunes. But all my USB ports work perfectly fine with all other devices.

So I was hoping people may have any advice? Cheers :)

I have a few other lightning cables (mostly Apple branded) but my computer does not have a USB-C port on it. However, I was finally able to get it to work after connecting an Apple brand USB-A to Lightning cable directly to a USB 3.1 port on the back of my computer (directly connected to the motherboard). All other ports did not work, even though device manager was detecting the iPhone correctly and following the various reinstall recommendations did not work. Only the USB 3 port worked properly and I didn't have to restart everything - though of course in all my troubleshooting i did a number of restarts and reinstalls so it can't hurt if you restart your computer or iTunes as well.

Just for background, I've got an iPhone 12 Mini on iOS 14.3. The computer I'm trying to sync to is an AMD Ryzen 3 (Gigabyte B450M motherboard) running Windows 10 (with the latest Dec 2020 patches). I do not have a USB-C port on the computer anywhere, so the included cable is not particularly useful at the moment. Thanks for the discussion which helped me narrow down some things to try.

Check your background processes.

Quit iTunes and then open up your Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del, then select Task Manager). Scroll down to see if there is an iTunes background app still running. If so, end the task (right click on the application, then click 'end task').

Open the main iTunes application once again. Plug in your phone and run through the prompts to trust the device, etc., if they appear.

I had the issue on windows 10. I dont have a USB C port so i used my other Original apple cables from earlier models ie Iphone 11 etc. None worked, but bought a USB C female> USB 3 male converter, stuck it on the end of the new Iphone 12 cable and BINGO it was able to sync. Clearly they have a new chip in the new iphone cable so only the original Iphone 12 cable will work.

If you are using the original i12 cable with a pc/laptop with a USB C port and cant sync...then clearly this is not the solution, but for others I trust it will save you some grief. God knows why they dont allow other original Apple cables to sync on the new phone and you have to use the new cable..........aaaargh

Unlucky, Apple needs to acknowledge the problem before issuing a Replacement Program for the affected iPhone 12. USB-C cable or the dock connector on the iPhone doesn’t have enough power to sync with iTunes, thus it disconnects even if you try to take a backup or sync it. You will see that an old normal USB-A->lightning cable (the ones used from iPhone 5 up to iPhone X) will work just fine.

I am having the exact same issue. Uninstalled iTunes, rebooted, reinstalled and rebooted again and still no go. I tested on all USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports and even thought it was the cable since I am using an aftermarket flat USB-A to Lightning cable but I connected it to another PC and iTunes was able to detect and connect to it so I was able to make a backup and sync. Both computers are using the latest iTunes 12.10.10.

I'm thinking it could be a hardware compatibility issue. What hardware are you using? The PC that makes the USB device connected sound and the iPhone 12 asks to Trust but iTunes still doesn't connect to it is an AMD system running a Ryzen 5 3600 with MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max motherboard with latest BIOS 7B86vH7. The PC that works is an Intel system running a Core i5 4690K with Asus Z97-A motherboard.

I had the same exact issue. Plugged in my IPhone X with the regular cable and it worked. Tried it with my daughter 12 Pro and also worked. However, ITune would not recognize my new 12 Pro. I tried using the USB C port on my PC and it worked! Not sure why the regular USB A to lightning worked on my daughter 12 pro but not mine. Will definitely take mine in to Apple to run diagnostics.

Received my wife’s iPhone 12 mini today and am having the same issue as pretty much everyone else in this thread. Running an AMD Ryzen 5 and iTunes will not recognize the new phone.

Luckily I had an old Intel i3 laptop laying around that I was able to use that DID recognize the phone and successfully restored the new phone. One thing to note was my Ryzen 5 was running Windows 10 v2004 but the Intel was still on Windows 10 v1909.

I can also confirm that the cable you’re using DOES matter. iTunes recognized the phone with both the USB-C cable (with a USB adapter connected) that came with the phone and a regular Apple brand lightning cable. It DID NOT work with an Insignia brand lightning cable.

I have R5 3600X on MSI motherboard, have had same problem. It works after lot test. Some conclution might help here.

My old iPhone was iPhone 6 and 6s. works for all port and all cable.

New one is 12 mini.

Original USB-C works on a windows PAD-PC.

I have only USB-A on the desktop. Some cable(non-original) works from some port, even USB 2.0. but on most port, it might pop up the Trust/Not question on iphone. Some shows and dissapear even after 2 sec. Some time, it shows up the iPhone in file explorer, "Apple iPhone"- "Internal Storge", but empty after that.

Some cable works only with USB 3.1 port. actually, all cabel works on port USB-A 3.1

so, for me, it works now with any cable from all USB-A 3.1. try it :)

The fact that you can sometimes get it to connect suggests you have all the right software in place. Check the docking port for fluff that might stop your device from getting a good connection. With lightning connectors you may sometimes find that turning the connector over gives a better connection. Reboot the iPhone too if you haven't done so recently.

Just to add my personal experience, it’s USB 3.1 Gen 1 port.

My Asus B450-I motherboard has the usual BLUE 3.1 Gen 1 ports and the RED 3.1 Gen 2 ports. Both are Type A.

The blue ones work normally, while red ones will only charge the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I’ve also tried a Mitori branded USB-C to USB-A 3.1 adaptor out of curiousity. Results are same as above. Only the BLUE Gen 3.1 ports work with my Pro Max.

Oddly enough, the USB C cable is only working as a charger when I connect to my HP laptop. iTunes isn't recognizing it and I still have to connect to the old USB cord we've used in the past in order to get iTunes to recognize my iPhone 12. I wonder if there's a work around because I can't see Apple giving us this new USB C cable and not being able to use it to access iTunes.

Ok. I've now tried it with a cable I bought from ESR and everything is recognized. But my phone was recognized by the USB-c-Lightning cable that Apple provided in the box as well, so go figure. Folks, keep in mind that if you're trying to connect your phone with a 3rd party cable it must be MFi certified. If anyone's interested here's the ESR cable I am using:
