Overnight update (?) killed hp 1320 printer.

Workaround ( for macOS 10.15.7 and my HP LaserJet 1200 )

1. Go into System Preferences and pick "Printers and Scanners".
2. Unlock and authenticate with an Admin account.
3. Click on the '+' sign to add a printer.
4. On the top of the next panel choose "IP". Type something ( I just typed 'a' ) in the "address" and the lower half of the panel will enable. You're looking for the "Use" popup to enable,
5. Pick the "Generic Postscript Printer" from the "Use" popup menu.
6. Press the "Add" button.

Now selecting this generic postscript printer allowed me to print in Apple's Pages app. Iffy but better than not printing. HTH.

Almost everyone with an HP printer is facing the same or similar problems,

it looks like the certificates for certain aspects of HP's printer software ran out yesterday.

Everyone waiting for a fix from HP.

The postscript driver is really slow. There is another better driver in the list. You have to look closely in the driver list but around the middle is a generic PCL 4-5 driver. It prints with the same speed as the old 1320 driver and has a check box for duplex printing.

The generic PCL driver looks like the best choice. HP has updated the certificate on the newer printer drivers but not on the 1320. It is too old I guess. The Generic PCL driver is working fine for me. I tried loading the Apple HP driver package to try that but on Big Sur, I get a message from the installer that the package does not support my operating system. Maybe the will release a version that supports Big Sur eventually but if HP won't update the driver certificate, it may not. be much help.

Ok… I have a working solution.

1] Disconnect the printer USB cable from your Mac.

2] Remove the Laser Jet 1320 in the Printers pane of System Preferences

3] Delete the entire HP folder from here > /Library/Printers/hp. This should remove all of those annoying error messages.

4] Now connect the printer USB cable to the Mac and add it through the Printers preference pane. This should prompt a download of the correct drivers.

As a double check, to see if it is connecting properly, you can try adding the printer without the USB cable plugged in … this will leave you with no printer to choose from but once you connect the USB cable the Mac recognises the printer and suggests the download and take you through the same process.

5] That should get you up and running with no errors. I have now been printing for an hour from lots of apps without issue after having a dead printer for three weeks.

Instead of selecting Generic Postscript printer, under use select software and select HP Laserjet Series PCL 4/5. It prints way faster than the postscript driver. Pretty much like the original driver. You just need to select Duplex in the options and then Duplex printing option will be available when you print.

I also have this question. I do not see any reply with suggestions on how to fix it.

I have reinstalled the printer using the generic Postscript Option

And it works .. not ideal but better than nothing!
