HP Officejet 8600 won't scan anymore

The issue is new. The pop-up says "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)" on my iMac runnning Catalina and the popup says "software for "%@" failed to run. (-9927) on my Macbook Pro running Mojave. I use Mojave on my Macbook Pro because I have 32-bit software on it I still use. To make my life more efficient I also have three HP Officejet Pro 8600 printers I paid big $$$ for when new. I like having to only stock one size ink cartridges. I can print just fine but trying to use the scan function from the computers is bricked. Printing and all other communication (i.e. ink levels) work fine. I reset the printer system and reloaded all printers individually even not using Airprint and selecting the HP 8600 drivers after updating the most recent drivers from HP. The scan function is still bricked. Dusted off an old Macbook running El Capitan and the scan function works just fine. Looks like either Apple or HP automatic upgrades just bricked the scan function on my three very expensive printers. I use my scanning function almost daily.

MacBook, OS X 10.11

Update: HP Printer Software 5.1 should now be becoming available through Software Update to fix this issue.

Open >System Preferences>Software Update (Command R will reload and do a fresh check)
